Covalent bonds:single covalent bond, double Covalent bond and tripple covelent bond and examples.
Covalent bonds
A chemical bond that is formed by mutual sharing of electrons between atoms.
Example 1
Consider the formation of covalent bond in hydrogen molecule.
Hydrogen belongs to IA group elements.
So it has one electron in its valence shell.
It needs one more electron to attain (حاصل کرنے کے لئے) the electronic configuration of noble gas.
Thus, two hydrogen atoms share an electron pair and achieve the electronic configuration of helium.
A shared pair of electrons is attracted by two hydrogen nucle.
That means there is a more stable situation than that exists in separate atoms.
Types of covalent bond
There are three types of covalent bond single covalent bond double covalent bond and triple covalent bond.
Single covalent bond
A covalent bond that is formed by sharing of one electron pair is called single covalent bond for example H2 and F2 molecule contains single covalent bond.
Example 2
Consider the formation of covalent bond in fluorine molecule.
Fluorine belongs to VIIA group elements.
So, it has seven electrons in its valence shell.
It needs one more electron to attain the electronic configuration of noble gas.
Thus two fluorine atoms share an electron pair and achieve the electronic configuration of neon.
A shared pair of electrons is attracted by two fluorine nucle.
That means there is a more stable situation than that exists in separate atoms
2. Double cobrand bond
Covalent bond that is form by sharing of the two electron pairs is called double Coral bond. For example O2
Example 3
Consider the formation of covalent bond in oxygen molecule.
Oxygen belongs to VIA group elements.
So, it has six electrons in its valence shell.
It needs two more electrons to attain the electronic configuration of noble gas.
Thus two oxygen atoms share two electron pairs and achieve the electronic configuration of neon.
Two shared pair of electrons are attracted by two oxygen nucle.
That means there is a more stable situation than that exists in separate atoms
Triple covalent bond
Covalent bond that is formed by sharing of the three electron pairs is called triple covalent bond. For example N2
Consider the formation of covalent bond in nitrogen molecule.
Oxygen belongs to VA group elements.
So, it has five electrons in its valence shell.
It needs three more electrons to attain the electronic configuration of noble gas.
Thus two nitrogen atoms share two electron pairs and achieve the electronic configuration of neon.
Two shared pair of electrons are attracted by two .nitrogen
nucle.
That means there is a more stable situation than that exists in separate atoms
