Question: What are Vitamins? Explain its types and importance in detail.
Answer.
The organic compounds which are required by our bodies to prevent the specific disease as well as to improve some organ functions but cannot be produced by our bodies are called vitamins.
For example, Vitamin A improves the chemical transmission of image to brain. It also keeps the cornea moist. Vitamin C helps in formation of blood and enhances the immunity against illness and cancer.
Types of Vitamins
Vitamins are of two types:
1. Fat soluble vitamins 2. Water soluble vitamins
1. Fat soluble vitamins.
The vitamins which dissolve in fats are called fat soluble vitamins.
Examples. Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K
If fats soluble vitamins are taken in large quantity, they can cause diseases. For example, excess of vitamin D in the body can results in irritability, dryness of skin and head-ach. Similarly, if vitamin D is taken in large quantity, it can cause pain in bones, hard deposits in joints and kidney and weight loss.
2. Water soluble vitamins
The vitamins which dissolve in water are called water soluble vitamins. For example, vitamins are B (complex) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid). These vitamins can be stored in body up to certain level. If these vitamins are taken in excess, these are excreted from the body. However, these vitamins are not toxic, if taken in excess.
