Dextrose is simple sugar and it can readily be utilized by the body. Therefore, aqueous solution of dextrose is given intravenously to patients under different conditions. 5% m/v aqueous solution (containing 5g of dextrose dissolved in 100 cm3 solution) is given to the patients which are severely dehydrated or have low blood sugar. Dextrose is also combined with many drugs for IV injections.

Question How many molecules of water are needed to allow a disaccharide to form monosaccharide? Illustrate with a chemical equation.
