Suppose you are rescuing a boat in flooded area. If you are throwing water at the same rate at which it enters the boat then you can maintain the boat in the state of dynamic equilibrium. If not, you are in trouble.
Question: Explain the terms’’ Reversible reaction’’ and ‘’state of equilibrium’’.
Answer. Reversible reaction: A reaction that can proceed both forward and backward , depending on the condition is called reversible reaction. Such reactions are represented by the following symbol between the reactants and the products.
State of equilibrium: State of equilibrium is the stage in a reversible reaction when rate of forward reaction is equal to the rate of reverse reaction.
Question: Define and explain the law of mass action and derive the expression for the equilibrium constant Kc.
Answer. It states that “The rate at which the reaction proceeds is directly proportional to the product of active masses of the reactants”.
Explanation: Consider a general reaction in which A and B react with each other to produce products C and D. The reaction is represented by the following chemical equation.
The equilibrium concentrations of A, B, C and D are represented in square brackets like [A], [B]’ [C] and [D] respectively.
