Question 3.6 A double bond is stronger is stronger than single bond and triple bond is stronger than double bond?
Answer.
Double bond is stronger than single bond between same atom, because in double bond more electrons (four electrons) are shared between two nuclei as compared to lesser electrons (two electrons) in single bond. In other words, more energy is required to break interactions between two nuclei and four electrons in double bond as compared to two nuclei and two electrons.
In similar manner, triple bond is further stronger than double bond between same atoms due to presence of more electrons (six electrons) in it.
