Structure of Molecules: solved exercise and Think-Tank

 Question 2: Give short answers.

I. State octate and duplet rule.

Answer.

Octate Rule

The tendency of atoms to acquire eight electrons in their valence shell, when these atoms form chemical bonds is called octet rule. For example, C, N  O F etc have tendency to acquire eight electrons in their  valence shells during formation of their chemical bonds and obey octet rule.

Duplet rule

The tendency of few atoms to acquire two electrons in their valence shell, when these atoms form chemical bonds is called duplet rule. For example, H, Li, Be etc have tendency to acquire eight electrons in their  valence shells during formation of their chemical bonds and obey octet rule.

ii. Explain formation of covalent bond between two nitrogen atoms.

Answer.

Consider the formation of covalent bond in a nitrogen molecule.

Nitrogen belongs to VA group elements.

So, it has five electrons in its valence shell.

 It needs three more electrons to attain the electronic configuration of noble gas.

Thus two nitrogen  atoms share three electron pairs and achieve the electronic configuration of neon.

Thus, three shared pair of electrons are attracted by two nitrogen nuclie.

That means there is a more stable situation than that exists in separate atoms.

iii.  How does aluminium form cation?

Answer.

Aluminum belongs to IIIA group elements.

So, it hs three electrons in its valence shell.

 It needs to lose three electrons to attain the electronic configuration of noble gas

Thus aluminum atom loses three electrons and achieve the electronic configuration of neon.

Al (1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2 3p1) ---------------> Al3+ (1s2, 2s2, 2p6) + 3e-

iv.  How does oxygen farm anion?

Oxygen belongs to VIA group elements.

So, it has six electrons in its valence shell.

Therefore, it needs to gain  two electrons to attain the electronic configuration of noble gas

Thus oxygen atom gains two electrons and achieve the electronic configuration of neon.

O (1s2, 2s2, 2p4) + 2e' ---------------> O2- (1s2, 2s2, 2p6)

v. Draw electron cross and dot structure for H2O molecule.

 Question 3: Describe the importance of noble gas electronic configuration.

Answer. The VIIIA group elements are called noble gases. General electronic configuration of noble gases (except He) is ns2np2. Due to this electronic configuration, noble gases are stable and  not active. So, these gases don't take part in chemical reactions. Therefore, these gases are sometimes called innert gases. Electronic configuration of some noble gases is given below.

He = 1s2

Ne = 1s2, 2s2, 2p6

Ar = 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6.

 Question 4: Explain how elements attain stability?

Answer.  Elements achieve stability by formation of two types of bonds: ionic bonds and covalent bond.. in ionic bonds, an atom gains stability either by lose of electrons or by gain of electron. However, in covalent bond, atom attain stability by sharing of valance electrons.

Question 15: Is there a need for more adhesives?

Answer. In modern air crafts and automobile epoxy resin adhesives are useful for assembling, saving money and reducing weight. Hence, there is a need for more adhesives.

Question 16: What is the importance of glues and Adhesive in our society?

Answer. Synthetic adhesives such as glue and epoxy resins that are widely used in industrial applications.

Glues are cheaper than synthetic adhesives. Glues are extensively used as adhesives for veneer (   باریک لکڑی کی ایک پتلی آرائشی پرت جو موٹی لکڑی یا دیگر مواد پر لگائی جاتی ہے۔)  , plywood, corrugated cartons( نالی دار کارٹن  ) laminated boards  (پرتدار بورڈز). Glues for metals and glass are also available.

Epoxy resins are used where water resistant I required. They form tough and hard coating. They are also flexible and chemically resistant. For these reasons, dams, bridges, thermal power stations are coated with epoxy resins.

T he Federal Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (FBISE) is an autonomous body that conducts the examinations in the institutions affiliated with it in Pakistan as well as abroad.  Punjab government has ten boards of Intermediate & Secondary Education including Bahawalpur Board, D.G. Khan Board, Faisalabad Board, Gujranwala Board, Lahore Board, Multan Board, Rawalpindi Board and Sargodha Board and each board conducts exams independently.   Federal Board generally follows the international norms and  standards. Federal Board paper pattern is quite tricky and similar to O-Level and A Level formats. These questions need conceptual approach to be solved. Punjab board’s Paper pattern is comparatively easy up to some extent.  We are currently focusing on the subject of Chemistry for all classes affiliated with Federal Board ( IX ,  X ,  XI ,  XII )  and Punjab Board (  XI   XII ). We intend to extend it to all subjects in future. After reading All Student Notes, studen

Shielding Effect (Grade 9 Students) and its trend in Periodic Table.

Question: What is shielding  effect? Give its trends in the periodic table. Answer . Shielding Effect  The decrease in force of attraction between nucleus  and valence electrons due to presence of inner shell electrons is called shielding effect.  It is also known as screening effect. It increases with increase in inner shell electrons. For example, Mg has greater shielding effect than Be. This is because Mg has eight more inner-shell electrons than Be. Trend in Periodic Table In period As we move from left to right in a period, shielding effect remains constant. Reason is that the number of inner shell electrons remains constant along the period. In group As we move from top to bottom in a group, shielding effect increases. This is due to fact that the number of inner shell increases and hence, inner shell electrons also increase. For example, Na has greater shielding effect than Li because of eight more inner shell electrons than Li.  Example 3.5 Identi
