Question 4.1: Why do atoms react?
Answer: In periodic table, each period starts with alkali metal (except first period) and ends at noble gas. As noble gases do not participate in the chemical reaction, so these elements are also called innert gases. They are stable and innert due stable electronic configuration in their valence shell (i.e, ns2, np6).
The other elements also have tendency to attain noble gas electronic configuration. So, due to this reason, each element reacts.
Question 4.2: What is doublet rule?
Answer. Tendency of an atom to acquire 2 electrons in its valence shell is called duplet rule.
Question 4.3: what is octet rule?
Answer. The tendency of an atom to acquire 8 electron in its valence shell is called octet rule
Question 4.4: Find the number of valence electrons in the following atoms using periodic Table .
A. carbon B. magnesium C. phosphorus
Solution: A. Carbon belongs to group IVA, it contains 4 electrons in the valence shell.
B. Magnesium belongs to group IIA, so it contains two electron in its valence shell.
C. Phosphorus is present in group VA, so it has 5 electrons in its valence shell.
Question 4.5: What are chemical bonds?
Answer. The forces attraction that hold atoms together in a substance are called chemical bonds. Basically, the forces of attraction that results in chemical bond formation between atoms are electrical in nature and atom other than noble gases have tendency to to react with other elements by gaining or losing electrons. When atoms gain or lose electrons they acquire electronic configuration of next noble gas element.

Question 4.5: Discuss different types of bonds.
Answer. Chemical bonds are of two types.
1. Ionic bond
2. Covalent bond
1. Ionic bond
The chemical bonds that are formed between two atoms when one atom loses electron to form cations another atom gains this electron to form anion, are called ionic bond.
It can also be defined as the forces of attraction that hold oppositely charged in together are called ionic bonds.
It can also be defined as the forces of attraction that hold oppositely charged in together are called ionic bonds.
Example 1: Ionic bond formation between Na and Cl
- Na is a metal and Cl is a non metal.
- Metal atom has tendency to lose electron(s) while non metal atom has tendency to gain electron(s) to acquire electronic configuration of nearest noble gas.
- Since Na belongs to IA group, so it has one electron in its valence shell.
- Therefore, Na loses one electron to form Na+ ion.
- Since Cl belongs to VII group, so it has seven electrons in its valence shell.
- Therefore, Cl gains one electron to form Cl- ion.
Example 2: Ionic bond formation between Mg and F
- Mg is a metal and F is a non metal.
- Metal atom has tendency to lose electron(s) while non metal atom has tendency to gain electron(s) to acquire electronic configuration of nearest noble gas.
- Since Mg belongs to IIA group, so it has two electrons in its valence shell.
- Therefore, Mg loses two electrons to form Mg2+ ion.
- Since F belongs to VII group, so it has seven electrons in its valence shell.
- Therefore, each of two F atoms gains one electron to form F- ion.
Example 3: Ionic bond formation between Mg and O
- Mg is a metal and O is a non metal.
- Since O belongs to VI group, so it has six electrons in its valence shell.
- Therefore, O atom gains two electrons to form O2- ion.
Covalent bond:
The chemical bond that is formed by mutual sharing of electrons between two atoms is called covalent bond.
